Massenet's "Werther" might be considered his "other opera." His "Manon" is more famous, but "Werther" is beginning to get the wider attention it surely deserves. Based on a trendsetting novel by Goethe, the opera is the story of a man whose lost love leads him to the ultimate act of desperation.

On World of Opera, host Lisa Simeone presents "Werther" in a production from the Salzburg Festival. Tenor Piotr Beczala stars in the title role, alongside soprano Angela Gheorghiu as Charlotte.

Listen to World of Opera on the Operavore on stream each week at WQXR.org. The program streams Thursdays at 4 pm, Saturdays at 5 pm and Sundays at 1 pm.
