Violinist Noemi Gasparini on the nearly-constructed stage of the Palcco in Guadalajara, Mexico (Noemi Gasparini)

This week’s Young Artists Showcase ties up some loose ends with exciting in-concert performances that didn’t fit into previous programs from Salon de Virtuosi and Young Concert Artists.

We introduced the new winners of Salon de Virtuosi scholarship grants in last week’s episode. Three Hungarian-born musicians return this week, starting with violinist Bela Horbath performing Sarasate’s popular Gypsy fantasy Zigeunerweisen. Then pianist Balázs Fülei plays the Hungarian peasant music of Bartok’s Allegro Barbaro. Both of those performances were recorded at Salon de Virtuosi’s gala concert this past October, one of the final recitals at Steinway Hall before the historic 57th Street venue closed. The third Hungarian on the show is pianist Daniel Lebhardt, who was introduced last month with an excerpt of the Bach Partita No. 1. This performance, presented by Young Concert Artists, is unabridged and so is the Schubert Arpeggione Sonata, as played by cellist Edgar Moreau.

Violinist Noemi Gasparini introduced herself to the Young Artists Showcase last year, playing French works by Chausson and Debussy. A daughter of Mexican and Italian immigrant parents, Gasparini speaks fluent Spanish, Italian, French and English. This performance was recorded two months ago at the Italian Cultural Institute in Mexico City. Noemi closes the program with another Hungarian-flavored work: Tzigane by Maurice Ravel.

Next week is the 37th birthday of the Young Artists Showcase on WQXR. Cellist Carter Brey will come by the studio with pianist Gabriela Martinez to celebrate.
