Saturday, September 13 at 7 pm, tune into the final installment of the 2014 series Q2 Music at the Proms. The Scottish Chamber Orchestra plays three orchestral works by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, in celebration of his 80th birthday, live from Royal Albert Hall.
Out of Davies' vast and remarkably diverse output, the SCO has chosen three orchestral works inspired by the landscape and culture of Scotland, where the composer resides. Precocious 25-year-old conductor Ben Gernon leads the program.
Opening the concert is the London premiere of Ebb of Winter, an ebullient concert overture inspired by spring in Orkney. It is followed by the thrilling Strathclyde Concerto No. 4, featuring clarinetist Dmitri Ashkenazy. The work was commissioned and premiered by the SCO in 1990 and is based on a 19th century Scots folk melody. The night comes to a raucous end with one of Davies's most widely played pieces, An Orkney Wedding, with Sunrise.
