Listen to the first in a four-part series of music live from last year's Ojai Music Festival, hosted by acclaimed opera director Peter Sellars with performances from Roomful of Teeth and the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE).

This Thursday, June 8, the 2017 Ojai Music Festival launches with four days of performances and premieres of music by this year's Artistic Director Vijay Iyer, alongside composers Anthony Braxton, Suzanne Farrin, Tyshawn Sorey, George Lewis and more. To prepare, we're revisiting the highlights of 2016 festival with then Music Director Sellars.

Last year, the Ojai Music Festival celebrated its 70th year by inviting theater and opera director Peter Sellars to curate the festival, which took place from June 9-12 in picturesque outdoor settings around the forests, valleys and mountains that surround Ojai, California.

Among the featured artists was the celebrated Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho whose opera The Passion of Simone was given its American premiere in a new chamber version, alongside her Only the Sound Remains the Same, which takes on two Japanese Noh plays set to prose by poet Ezra Pound.

For this first installment of 2016 festival highlights, Sellars guides us through selections from Saariaho's Kesapaiva, performed by Roomful of Teeth and the International Contemporary Ensemble and woven around her works Terrestre, Light and Matter and Adjo. Recorded on June 10, the program also features a performance of Caroline Shaw's Pulitzer Prize-winning Partita for 8 Voices.
