This week, World of Opera presents Janacek's devastating Jenufa, from the Vienna State Opera, starring German soprano Dorothea Röschmann in the title role. Lisa Simeone hosts the broadcast.

The strong cast also includes Angela Denoke as Jenufa's stepmother, Kostelnicka, who secretly drowns her stepdaughter's baby, born out of wedlock. Her horrific act — meant to save the family from disgrace — is also one of love and protection, and it forms the moral question at the core of this opera.

Ingo Metzmacher leads the Vienna State Opera Orchestra and Chorus. World of Opera airs Thursdays at 4 pm, Saturdays at 5 pm and Sundays at 1 pm on the Operavore stream.
