Conductor Bramwell Tovey. Conductor Bramwell Tovey. (Chris Lee)

Tune in Thursday at 9 pm as Bramwell Tovey conducts a program inspired by Spain. We'll hear a pair of works by the Spanish composer Manuel de Falla: The Three Cornered Hat suite and Nights in the Gardens of Spain. But first on the program are excerpts from Massenet's opera Le Cid, about a Spanish warrior who's caught between duty and love.

Vocalist Virginie Verrez and pianist Joyce Yang are the featured soloists.

Program Details:

Conductor: Bramwell Tovey
Joyce Yang, piano
Virginie Verrez, mezzo-soprano

Massenet: Excerpts from Le Cid
Falla: Nights in the Gardens of Spain
Falla: The Three-Cornered Hat Suite

It's a crying shame that Mr. Tovey chose to play only excerpts from Massenet's ballet from the opera "Le Cid" that, if complete, comprises "Castillane", "Andalouse", "Aubade" (a morning song and not a place of dance origination), "Catalane", "Madrile`ne" and "Navarraise". While I compliment WQXR for "truth in advertising" in stating that there were only excerpts from the ballet on the program, I didn't listen at all to what could have been an entirely satisfying concert.
