Strauss's 'Elektra' from the Vienna State Opera. Strauss's 'Elektra' from the Vienna State Opera. (Wiener Staatsoper / Michael Pöhn)

Surely, Clytaemnestra, her husband Agamemnon, and their kids Elektra and Orestes, qualify as one of the most dysfunctional families in all of literature, not to mention opera. Elektra takes the lead in this chapter of their appalling, yet absorbing history.

On World of Opera, host Lisa Simeone brings us Strauss's "Elektra" in a production from the Vienna State Opera. The stars are soprano Nina Stemme as Elektra; soprano Ricarda Merbeth as Chrysothemis, Elektra's slightly more stable sister; and contralto Anna Larsson as their mother, Clytemnestra.

I hear you, Estella. I once got a job partially because I suggested not using "kids" in a series of commentary pieces. It's extremely informal.

"kids" ? "dysfunctional"? Is this an opera broadcast or a support group? I very much appreciate the stream and all of Operavore but please don't talk to us as if we're stupid. If we're listening to this in the first place we don't need the commentary dumbed down. thank you- Estella
