This past July, Young Artists Showcase host Bob Sherman was on the West Coast visiting the 16th Annual iPalpiti Festival of International Laureates, which takes place every summer in Beverly Hills.
While at the iPalpiti Festival, Sherman heard concerts at the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the LACMA Bing Theater in Los Angeles. Along with the iPalpiti Orchestral Ensemble of International Laureates, which will be featured on a later show, he heard a remarkable young Romanian violinist named Alexandru Tomescu.
Recently, Tomescu came by the Young Artists Showcase studio to give a benefit recital dedicated to the Hospice Foundation in Bucharest. For that concert and this session, Tomescu brought in a fellow Romanian, pianist Matei Varga, who was introduced on this program some years ago in a chamber music recording of students from the Mannes College of Music.
Starting off with an entry to WQXR’s Month of Mozart, the pair performed an Impromptu by Romanian composer George Enescu, as well as works by Brahms and Schumann.
W. A. Mozart: Violin Sonata No. 18 in G Major, K 301
George Enescu: Impromptu concertant, for violin & piano in G flat major
Johannes Brahms: Scherzo in C minor from the "F.A.E." Sonata
Robert Schumann: Fantasie in C major, Op. 131 (arr. Kreisler)
— Alexandru Tomescu, violin; Matei Varga, piano.
