The Young Artists Showcase this week shares an encore presentation of performances from the most recent winners of Salon de Virtuosi. Some 26 years ago, Charlotte White founded the Salon to help young artists on their road to success by offering them scholarships and concert opportunities.

This program, recorded at Steinway Hall this past October, featured the 2014-15 winners of Salon de Virtuosi scholarship grants. Hungarian-born violinist Bela Horvath opened with a piece by Henryk Wieniawski, and Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 6 was performed by pianist Balázs Fülei, who now teaches at the Liszt Academy in Budapest. In between, flutist Emi Ferguson brought a new Italian composer to the Showcase, and guitarist Gideon Whitehead introduced Argentinean composer Jose Luis Merlin. Another Romany flight came in the form of Ravel’s Tzigane, from the young conductor and moonlighting violinist, Kensho Watanabe.

All of this was recorded live at a special gala concert for Salon de Virtuosi, which happened to be one of the final recitals held at Steinway Hall before the historic showroom was closed after 90 years on 57th Street.
