Katarina Giotas as Suzuki and Jung Nan Yoon as Cio-Cio San star in 'Madama Butterfly.' (Mats Bäcker/Gotenborg Opera)
Operavore

Lisa Simeone hosts this broadcast of Puccini's beloved tragedy, Madama Butterfly, from Göteborg Opera in western Sweden. The production stars Jung Nan Yoon in the title role and tenor Marcelo Puenti as the reviled B.F. Pinkerton. Manlio Benzi conducts.

The story of Cio-Cio San, a 15-year-old Japanese former geisha who enters into an ill-fated marriage with a U.S. Naval officer, Madama Butterfly provokes tears among opera lovers and novices alike. While Cio-Cio San patiently waits — with their young son — for her husband's return from the U.S., he marries an American wife, whom he brings with him when he comes back to Japan. The results are devastating.

World of Opera airs Thursdays at 4 pm, Saturdays at 5 pm and Sundays at 1 pm on the Operavore stream.
