Tune in at 1 pm Saturday to hear Verdi's Otello from the Metropolitan Opera on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death. The Bartlett Sher production, which premiered earlier this season, returns for a second run this spring.

Notable for eliminating the use of blackface for the title role, this production stars tenor Aleksandrs Antonenko as the Moor who is tormented by his sense of otherness. Baritone Željko Lučić portrays Iago, who preys upon Otello's fragile psyche. Soprano Hibla Gerzmava makes her Met role debut as Desdemona, Otello's innocent but unfortunate wife. Adam Fischer conducts the performance.

Cast:

Otello: Aleksandrs Antonenko
Desdemona: Hibla Gerzmava
Iago: Željko Lučić
Cassio: Alexey Dolgov
Lodovico: James Morris

Conductor: Adam Fischer

I saw the telecast and thus dreaded the broadcast: not a Verdi voice among the lot, with a particularly unattractive personality in the title role. As for the slippy-slidey production, it made no sense at all. A low point of this season.

Some ugly singing today. Antonenko cracked spectacularly in the 3rd act. The Desdemona is just plain ugly.

Dear CBC am doing well. I remember Vinay, McCracken, Vickers but most of all MDM (Mario Del Monaco). I actually got angry when he "struck" Tebaldi and said " A terra e piangi" But I was only a kid then but he was SO convincing & she was SO angelic. Have all the b'casts of Martinelli & Tibbet from the "40's. Wonderful singing. State buona.

I watched the telecast a few weeks ago and liked the update. Interesting production. Looking forward to listening today. I was 12 years old when I first heard Otello via the Delta Opera radio broadcast with Ramon Vinay. My first reaction to this opera was Holy (will not repeat the full phrase). What glorious music. Bravo Peppino. A child of his old age.
CBC: Hope you are well Beduzzo.
