Meredith Arwady (L) as Dame Quickly and bass baritone Bryn Terfel as Falstaff in Verdi’s final opera Meredith Arwady (L) as Dame Quickly and bass baritone Bryn Terfel as Falstaff in Verdi’s final opera (Cory Weaver, SFO)

Saturday at 1 pm, join us for a broadcast from San Francisco Opera of Verdi's final masterwork. Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel, one of today’s most recognized Falstaffs, is in the lead role, supported by a cast that includes American contralto Meredith Arwady singing Dame Quickly.

Based on Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor and Henry IV, Verdi's last opera - which premiered in 1893 at La Scala - is a wise, wistful comedy about a self-deluded old man who vainly attempts to seduce two women at once.

The production, directed by Oliver Tambosi, with scenery and costumes by Frank Philipp Schlössmann, debuted at Lyric Opera of Chicago in 1999.

Cast:

Bryn Terfel (Falstaff)
Ainhoa Arteta (Alice Ford)
Heidi Stober (Nannetta)
Meredith Arwady (Dame Quickly)
Nicola Luisotti, conductor
Recorded Fall 2013, War Memorial Opera House

Superb cast, all of them. Thoroughly enjoyable. Bravi!

Hope to hear more of the wonderful tenor Demuro, who seems new to these shores.
