Today at 1 pm, hear the Met's revival of Willy Decker’s modern-dress, boldly minimalist staging of Verdi’s La Traviata, which debuted at the Salzburg Festival in 2005 and was first presented at the Met on Dec. 31, 2010.

Latvian soprano Marina Rebeka is Violetta, the terminally ill courtesan who enters an ill-fated love affair with a young gentleman named Alfredo, played here by American tenor Stephen Costello. Hawaiian baritone Quinn Kelsey is Giorgio Germont and Marco Armiliato conducts.

Ms. Rebeka reminds me of Dusolina Giannini who enjoyed an international career yet whose timbre was rather sharp-edged. Mr. Costello is a lyric tenor whose timbre brings to mind Charles Hackett, Nino Martino and Frederick Jagel. Mr. Kelsey brings to mind Francesco Valentino. The usual cuts are taken; and, if there were to be a more novel take on the opera, rather than the stupid staging...or lack of it... it might have been interesting to hear the second verses of "Ah! fors `e lui" and "Di provenza..." which probably haven't been heard since the 19th Century.

It's too bad contemporary opera singers, in order to make a living at all, have to be part and parcel of the handiwork of egocentric producers and designers who have so little regard for the librettist and composer that they foist anything upon the public under the guise of "updating" and being "contemporary". I've said it before and I'll say it again: the best way to listen to the Met and most opera these days is to listen only and imagine the 17th century in which the drama/opera takes place in. Better yet, listen to your favorite recordings and/or watch videos.

I agree with Agnes & all others who detest this staging! IF I were going to spend money going to see it, I would choose partial view or no view. Otherwise, close the eyes!

Of those singing today, I like the voice of Quinn Kelsey, the baritone singing the elder Germont. As usual when I like one of today's singers it's because the voice reminds me of someone from another generation of singers, and in this case I am reminded of Sherill Milnes, who was a hugh favorite of mine!

The singers are wonderful but who in his right mind approved of the stage setting. The Met always complains of money problems. So, why change the beautiful production that was a feast for the eyes, reflected the era and spared Violetta from climbing, descending, stripping furniture, etc. And the masked chorus?! Just awful and money wastefully spent. The only way to enjoy this production is with closed eyes.

I'll take your word for it that the photo is from Traviata but it could be Wotan and Fricka in Valhalla, the Macbeths at home,Elizabeth and Phillip the Second or Renato and Amelia. Hopefully, the conductor hasn't "updated" the score and it will,at least, sound like Traviata.
