'Nabucco' from the Lyric Opera of Chicago. 'Nabucco' from the Lyric Opera of Chicago. (Andrew Cioffi/Lyric Opera of Chicago)

Politics, religion, a dangerous love triangle, plus one of the greatest choral anthems every written in the soul-stirring “Va, pensiero" are all in Nabucco, which made Verdi a star on both the opera and political stage.

Baritone Željko Lučić stars in the title role of the tyrannical Babylonian king, whose ambition paves the way to his own destruction. As his antagonist, Zaccaria, a Hebrew prophet, is Dmitry Belosselskiy. In the middle are Nabucco's true daughter, Fenena, and his adopted daughter, Abigaille, both of whom love the same Hebrew warrior. Carlo Rizzi conducts the production.

An early Verdi, and not one of my preferred ones, but this cast was undeniably excellent. Lucic shone in the title role with his mellow, burnished sound, a true Verdian baritone (where are all the Italian baritones of yore?). The bassos were wonderful, nothing like those Russian bassos; and the sopranos were both very good. Superb cast, well done, all.

Lucic is bellowing. A lot of screaming in Italian.
Thank God, here comes the hit single. How beautiful.
Now I can go back to cooking.

Does Tatiana Serjan sound a lot like Renée Fleming or is it my radio playing tricks on me.

The story outline is funny indeed. Thanks. I needed funny. the plot of this opera is funny. Another opera with a outlandish plot is I Lombardi. But Nabucco has the hit single. I Lombardi does not have a HIT SINGLE. I would like to write that I Lombardi is a dog but do not want to upset anyone. Woof, woof.
