Violinist Vanessa-Mae to Ski at Sochi Olympics

LONDON (AP) -- The manager of Vanessa-Mae says the musician will be swapping her violin for skis to compete at the Winter Olympics.

Giles Howard says the classical-pop violinist has qualified for the Thai team at the Sochi games.

The International Ski Federation published rankings on Monday confirming Vanessa-Mae has met the qualifying criteria to compete at Sochi.

The federation's alpine media coordinator, Ana Jelusic, told Britain's Press Association news agency that the 35-year-old musician "ticks all the boxes," having gained the required level of points in at least five slalom or giant slalom races.

Singapore-born, London-raised Vanessa-Mae Vanakorn Nicholson competes as Vanessa Vanakorn, using the surname of her Thai father.

A child prodigy who played violin from age 5, she shot to fame in 1995 with her debut album "Violin Player."

Could call NYer! My question is: who's the guy behind her? Her ski coach?

Do you prefer electric violin on vinyl or CD? Which offers a warmer sound?

@ DuckDeadeye and NYer:
Perhaps by trading in her violin for ski gear and the giant slalom, Ms. Mae's career is going down hill? As electronic violin and Andre Rieu were mentioned in previous posts, may I bring your attention to a performance by BOND performing VICTORY with Mr. Rieu's orchestra which can be found on YouTube and showcases an electronic string quartet.

Maybe it's a "classical-pop" violin?

What is that electronic contraption she is playing in the photo?

Maybe they can double up and join the curling team, too.

She will be skating in the ice dancing competition with Andre Rieu!

What is a "classical-pop" violinist? And why Vanessa-Mae in body text and Vanessa Mae in the headline?

I guess I'm glad that a 35-year-old classical-pop musician will also be an Olympian -- but it all seems a bit silly.
