Watch: Young Classical Pianist Performs Epic Drake Medley
Thursday, September 22, 2016 - 07:50 AM
YouTuber and classically trained musician Lukas Moeller, through his channel Young Piano, has combined his talents as a pianist with the musical career of hip-hop artist Drake to make this impressive 18-minute medley video. The entire piece was transposed from the original Drake recordings "by ear" and include 25 of Drake's songs performed mostly in chronological order.
Moeller, 22, is based in Germany and has created similar videos including "The History of Kanye West."
"I grew up listening to Kanye and Drake. I love how they combine rap with a melodic influence," he said in an email. "I had classical piano lessons from 2003 to 2011, although I preferred learning my favorite songs by ear at home with the skills I've learned in the lessons. That's how I started converting hip-hop on the piano."
Moeller's "History of Drake" is another example of how younger classically schooled musicians are using their training to combine broad musical influences and reach new audiences on social media. Moeller can also be followed on Twitter.
What other popular artists would you like to see given the Young Piano treatment? Are there classical composers that you'd like to see crossed over to hip-hop?
