Headshot and cover art for Renée Fleming's album, 'Distant Light.' Soprano Renee Fleming. (Andrew Eccles / Decca)

The viola, some say, is the instrument that is closest to the human voice. Mostly those people are violists. Fans of the cello claim that it is the instrument most like the human voice. In India, classical musicians learn vocal music first because all of the instruments aspire to sound like singing. Well, if all these instruments are trying to sound like singers, why don’t we just listen to some singers? That’s exactly what we’ll do this week on The Furthermore.

Renee Fleming may be a  famous opera star, but we’ll hear her in an orchestral song — written by the elfin Icelandic rocker Björk. Netania Davrath never had that kind of fame, but in the folk-based "Songs Of The Auvergne" by Joseph Canteloube, she may have been unmatched. Dawn Upshaw achieved a rock star level of fame with her million-selling recording of the Symphony Of Sorrowful Songs by the late Henryk Gorecki. We’ll hear all of them and more at 9 pm on Saturday.
