(Abe Vasquez)

WQXR celebrates the musical talents of New York City Public School kids with a free concert by students from this year's Summer Arts Institute, a program of the NYC Department of Education. WQXR also honors the incredible generosity of the thousands of listeners who donated to the WQXR Instrument Drive.

During this concert, hosted by WQXR's Jeff Spurgeon, select instruments from the drive were played by students publicly for the first time. Watch the archived video webcast from The Greene Space.

The SAI is a tuition-free, intensive, arts program for New York City public school students entering grades 8-12, held at Frank Sinatra School of the Arts High School in Astoria, Queens. This year, for the first time, the Institute offers a string program utilizing instruments collected in the WQXR drive. Watch a rehearsal video below.

Today's concert was wonderful. I was privileged to attend Music and Art High School and play in an orchestra. This concert brought back many beautiful memories. Thank you.
I am so proud of these young people.
