Brooklyn's Darmstadt Series Presents Terry Riley's In C

Often considered the first major musical work of Minimalism, Terry Riley's In C has proven to be a sustainable piece of music since its birth in 1964. Its disregard for the tedious musical demands on performers has ensured a fruitful musical platform for a long and disparate list of musicians. In this episode of Cued Up on Q2, we explore a flickering and hypnotic live performance of In C, with the unique addition of a rock drummer (Jonathon Kane of the group Swans), along with a live performance of The Roots of the Moment by Pauline Oliveros, the singular composer and accordionist who premiered In C as a performer more than 45 years ago.

In this November 16 performance at (Le) Poisson Rouge, Brooklyn's Darmstadt Series presents its interpretation of the masterpiece, featuring a hand-picked ensemble that reflects the diversity of sounds of New York's New Music community including voices, electric guitars and electronics.

Throughout June, Brooklyn’s Issue Project Room will host its annual Darmstadt Institute festival, which takes part of its name from the German festival and city Darmstadt. The Brooklyn festival's concerts, talk-backs, lectures and film screenings all offer a varied look into the avant-garde.
