Missy Mazzoli: Raising Vacillation to High Art

Monday, February 06, 2012

Perhaps only an artist with Missy Mazzoli's self-evident clarity of purpose could have raised vacillation to an art form. It's the tension created by the relentless forward motion of Mazzoli's music, that ticking pulse, that gives the music the sense of a choked-up faltering between pitches.

Electroacoustic Storm

Sunday, November 07, 2010

One of the conspicuously binding forces between the music of concert halls and dance halls in the past fifty years has been the use of electronically generated sounds. In other words, if there was a Venn diagram that included Stockhausen and Lady Gaga, or David Tudor and N.W.A., the overlap would be electronics. This Sunday, November 7 at 2 p.m on Cued Up on Q2, listen to some of host Nadia Sirota's favorite electroacoustic performances from New York City.

In this August 17 CD release party at (Le) Poisson Rouge, however, pianist Kathleen Supové turns this dated notion on its head, presenting an eclectic evening of solo works written expressly for her by some of today's groundbreaking composers including Missy Mazzoli, Michael Gatonska, Anna Clyne, Dan Becker and Randall Woolf.
