  • The Mavericks project on Q2 has been for me a trip into my past, especially with John Schaefer and New Sounds at WNYC: Reich, Riley, Glass, obviously, and so many others. And the spirit is not left in the past: Q2 has come forward with today's Mavericks, thank you Nadia and whoever else is responsible for curating what we hear day in and day out - Nico Muhly, So Percussion, yMusic, ACME, ICE, Victoire, even the Icelandics of Bedroom Community (but, not enough of them) and, again, so many others. And, of course, John is still there, at the Mothership, with Soundcheck and New Sounds. There is simply no better source for the expression of the Living Composer than New York Public Radio.

  • It's not clear if this is on Q2 or 105.9. Please clarify ASAP.

  • mitan123 from New York - I thought Ms Rowell did a great job. It felt like she was in the room with me, very natural. Please tell me what is "timble", in reference to comparing Ms Rowell's voice with Nadia's? One of my favorite on-air personalities is Jerry Gordon who has a Jazz program at WPRB, Princeton. Jerry is the consummate guide to Jazz, his knowledge in depth is unmeasurable. Listen Friday at wprb.com or 103.3FM 11:00AM-2:00PM. If you think Mary had long pauses, if you think that was torture, listen to Jerry. Jerry is as good as it gets, Mary did just fine.

  • O.K., we are at the point where you guys are re-cycling material that has already been streamed, not just the normal re-stream at evening hours, but from previous days. Me? I am fine with it. But others may get frustrated. I realize that people may have missed material and you are doing them a good; but, most Q2 listeners are Q2 addicts. If they have not gotten it in the daytime, they probably got it that night. Maybe you need to re-think the time span on the next project. As much as I love this project, and the original American Mavericks project aired at WNYC, this is running too long.

  • Thanks for the audio archive.

  • It would be great to have this as a download, or at least a streaming file archive.

  • Ingram Marshall's "stream shift" (remember "air shifts"?) just started. This whole thing is incredible. Not the American Mavericks celebration, that is also, but no need to comment on what has been one of my supreme loves in all of music. The people who are doing these segments, MTT, Mary, now Ingram, all of them: what a testament to the value and significance of Q2. It would be nice to get Alan Gilbert. The press has created some mixed messages about his interest in New Music. I understand he has played some Jazz percussion. So, what would be cool would be Maestro Gilbert curating music with Classical percussionists in Jazz groups; or maybe music from the JALC Orchestra. All of this is just more evidence that Q2 should stand on its own feet as a constituent part of NYPR, and not as the child of WQXR, which in fact it never was.

  • Right now, Nadia and David are comparing the listening experience of Pandora with Q2. Yes, we listen as a community; but we comment in isolation. If NYPR would put a simply reply notification box for comments, then we could know when someone agrees, disagrees, whatever, with what we say. Me? I personally have no problem. I get Comments by RSS. So, I see everything. But most people do not do this. So, in effect, they are just as isolated as those using Pandora, Live365, AccuRadio, etc.

  • Fern- I donate on line, for WQXR, WNYC, WPRB, WBGO, WKCR, and KBEM. I have never been solicited. I have not received any email that I did not request.

  • Hey Don- Originally, WQXR had the legal right to show those future playlist ietms. But, WNYC did not. So, when WQXR was purchased from The New York Times, keeping it Classical, WQXR lost that right. So, there was a choice, and the choice was to save Classical Music on FM (and streaming) for the New York City Metropolitan area. If you want to see a copy of the legislation that limited WNYC, I have it and will gladly put it up here.

  • OMG!! Steve Rowland!! How are you? I hope that you see this, since these guys do not have a reply utility. I saw your reply because I have an RSS feed for the Comments pages. It is great to see you at Q2. And, how could I forget you and your work? You changed my life, especially in the world of Jazz, and especially the MDD Radio Project. From that project I went on to learn about not only MDD, but the other players in both of his groups. I know that you were speaking to me about the Shakespeare project when we were active together. Best of luck on that. Anyone out there who really wants to learn about Jazz starting with two giants, visit Steve's stuff at artistowned-dot-com. Buy the .mp3 files. I listened to each one over and over, and always learned something new. And, hey, the Bernstein project is a great thing in its own right, especially if you have seen the PBS project "Leonard Bernstein: Reaching For the Note". I am a huge fan of his music and his history. PBS also did a piece on Von Karajan. While there is no Von Karajan in the Bernstein video, Lenny takes up about twenty minutes of the Von Karajan video. Steve- thanks again for coming to Q2. BTW, I have a music blog, musicsprings-dot-wordpress-dot-com. It is based in living composers, orchestral and Jazz, lots of stuff from Q2, plus I follow six labels for new releases. I do not write, but I do not aggregate. I "spread the news".

  • Taking this spot to make some comments. I had a "driveway moment" right here on Q2 listening to Nadia and David Garland. First, the American Mavericks Radio project from A.P.M. via Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) was 13 weeks of bliss when it ran at WNYC. 4:00PM Sunday was for a while a "destination" at WNYC. We had this project, we had Steve Rowland's projects "Tell Me How Long 'Trane's Been Gone", the "Miles Davis Radio Project", and "Leonard Bernstein: An American Life". The American Mavericks project's 13 radio programs should be put on the air or streamed. They were about much more than the "mavericks". They comprised a veritable history of American music. There was and still is a web site. I have mentioned it here often. There are about 70 audio interviews and also some text interviews. The audio is still there; but one needs some archaic version of RealPlayer to get them to run. There are Kyle Gann's wonderful essays introducing the programs. The programs were narrated by Suzanne Vega, with M.T.T. MPR is doing nothing with this material. Most of the audio has been taken down. I asked for permission to disseminate the material on my MusicSprings blog, they declined. Me? I have everything. I recorded the programs, I recorded all of the interviews, I copied out all of the essays and text interviews. I built up a book, 550 pages, of the textual material for reading on airplanes, at the dentist, whatever. And, I "met" Phil Blackburn of Innova, who was involved in some of the interviews. I hope that Q2 can get permission to run the radio programs. Last, it is time for Q2 to stand on its own as a constituent member of New York Public Radio, To be a fourth piece on that NYPR icon.

  • Matt- You can always listen on the pop-up player, and then wander around the web site to see how things work. Alternatively, I use Winamp, I saved the link for .mp3 in Winamp. I do not often come to the web site, lots of us think that the old site was better, especially for comments. But, hey, you figured that out which is better than many.

  • Ad hominem attacks have no place here.
    Friday February 17, 2012, 04:02 AM
  • So, is Ms Rowell going to be a continuing host, or is this a one-off visit?
    Sunday February 05, 2012, 09:02 AM
  • I think it was Timo's piece at 3:18, I heard bits, riffs, from whom I cannot dredge up, maybe a Jazz pianist like Keith Jarrett, or a Blues piece, maybe even Leon Russell. If it bubbles up, I'll be back.

  • I would love to hear some of these interviews, but, sorry, no iTunes. Any other way?
