  • Any excuse to play ARVO P?RT. Well, I agree with that, I love P?RT. I got that formation of the name from an older usage by Stephen Hill at Hearts of Space http://www.hos.com. Stephen has curated a number of programs based on this composer. Check out especially PGM 375 "Constant Stillness - the Music of Arvo Part" Of Part, Stephen says, "INTRO : As we reach the waning days of another year, we try to take the time to reflect on our increasingly complex lives. It's at these times the music of the contemporary Estonian composer ARVO PART takes on a special importance, due to its innocence, simplicity, and non-exclusive spirituality. Part writes music rich with silence against the general turmoil and hubbub of the world. His constant desire is to express the mysterious, the numinous, and the unknowable. "Time and timelessness are connected" he says. "This instant and eternity are struggling within us. And this is the cause of all our obstinacy, our narrow mindedness, our faith, and our grief." On this edition of Hearts of Space a program dedicated entirely to the music of ARVO PART, called "CONSTANT STILLNESS."

  • Glenn- First, thanks so much not only for listening but for coming through to comment. It is nice to know that WQXR is reaching around the globe via the internet. But, I wonder if you are listening to the Q2 stream, or the 105.9 stream from the FM station. The FM station is pretty traditional Classical music. The Q2 stream, web only, is more eclectic, more "new music", edgier, may I say hipper. You are somewhere around 5-7 hours ahead of us. 12:00noon our time, on Q2, you will hear the very bright and knowledgeable Nadia Sirota with pretty much themed programming for four hours. These days, it is atonality. Come back and tell us if that is what you are hearing. If you are hearing hosts at any other time, and more normal traditional Classical music, you are catching the other stream. There are comment pages for that stream. Again, thanks for listening. Tell your friends. And, hey, send money. Join up. This is Public Radio. WQXR is owned by WNYC, an acronym for We Need Your Cash (shades of Mary Daley and good old times).. It has been a pleasure.

  • You can also access - and bookmark - Q2 in good old Winamp, the best stand -alone player. Winamp will handle your .mp3 audio library, your.mp4 video library, and all of your radio web streams, including those from Live365.

  • Pauline- You said, "...but wish to be ready to record it when it airs...." This is exactly the reason advance playlists were ruled out of bounds in copyright law. What one is supposed to do is purchase the music. Prior to its acquisition by WNYC, WQXR enjoyed a “grandfathered’ status regarding advance playlists. WNYC did not enjoy this status, and so, WQXR lost its status. Here is tre code, copyright, which is in force. U.S. Code Title 17 Chapter 1 Sec 114(d)(2)(B)(ii) "(ii) The transmitting entity does not cause to be published by means of an advance program schedule or prior announcement the titles of the specific sound recordings or phonorecords embodying such sound recordings to be transmitted" and (C)(ii) "the reansmitting entity does not cause to be published, or induce or facilitate the publication, by means of an advance program schedule or prior announcement, the titles of the specific sound recordings to be transmitted, the phonorecords embodying such sound recordings, or, other than for illustrative purposes, the names of the featured artists, except that this clause does not disqualify a transmitting entity that makes a prior announcement that a particular artist will be featured within an unspecified future time period..."

  • Ursula- You might be interested to know that some years ago, the infamous "Canon in D" by Pachelbel (spelling is from Wikipedia) was banned outright at WNYC due to overuse.

  • I just recently got into Bartok. Pretty much the skeleton of his work is all folk music. And Leonard Bernstein, going beyond even Copland by using his Bar Mitzvah haftorah trop in the second movement of the Jeremiah Symphony.

  • If you are going to program the Rodrigo on other than guitar, then, please, can we have the Miles Davis?

  • If you want to hear an incredible piece of Classical music, get a hold of a copy of a DVD, "Sonny Rollins: Saxophone Colossus". On this DVD, and apparently never recorded again, is a performance of Rollins' "Concerto for Tenor Saxophone and Orchestra", performed in Japan. There are as many as nine movements, all but I think the third movement on this DVD, interspersed with documentary material. It is well worth it.

  • One program is produced and it is streamed twice, once at midnight and once at noon. I am also a big fan. I am so much enjoying the new gig that I tried to buy a portable HD radio to use when I have to leave the house or office during the noon stream. No such luck, no reception where I live 35 miles from New York City.

  • This is interesting - one can hear the dissonance of two notes which are next to each other being struck at the same time. Thelonious Monk did a lot of this. Also, I just recently watched the Leonard Bernstein Omnibus program from 1955 ( you can download it is five parts from YouTube in Firefox with a Firefox extension. This works really well. Then merge the files with AVS Video Converter 6 from http://www.avs4you.com. The License is cheap). Bernstein discusses the fact that one can actually here a tone between the two - this is on the piano - and so a tone that does not really exist on its own. So, who came first. Monk or Schnittke?

  • Sid- These days people are getting used to listening to one of the web streams on computers. The streams are very good, high bit rates. Some people use excellent computer speakers. Others tether the computer to the stereo system via a cable with a 3.5 mini plug for the computer's sound cars on one end, and two RCA plugs for left and right channels on the other end.

  • Diane- My love of the Largo from the 2nd movement is shared with my daughter. She was a ballet dance and choreography student. For competitions, I supplied the music. With the Largo, she won a Dance Educators of America national competition. Now, she is a Mom with two kids on the other coast. If one of us hears this piece on the radio, WQXR here or KUSC in Los Angeles, the discovering party phones up the other and simply holds the phone up to the speaker. Until the moment passes. Then silently slips the phone back on the cradle. Later, we speak about it. This has been going on for 19 years.

  • I think I overspoke about what Innova is doing. I think that this fan thing should do what I want. But I have not received anything yet on my Facebook page. I think that one can also grab the RSS URL and put it into one's Facebook page as a link, which is what I did with my blog. I am going to try that. I will come back with any results.

  • So, now I am a "friend" of Q2 on Facebook. Does that mean that Q2 items will appear on my Facebook page, which is what I want? Or do I still need to come to the Q2 Facebook page to get new items?
    Saturday February 06, 2010, 04:02 AM
  • Re:Facebook "friending". This absolutely can be done. http://innova.mu, the public face of the American Composers Forum in St Paul, MN did it. I get stuff from them EVERY DAY. On my Facebook page. American Composers Forum, http://composersforum.org Philip Blackburn, Chris Campbell are the two people I know. You can use my name with either Philip or Chris. I hesitate to put phone numbers or email addresses on the Comments page. You can either get them from the web site, or, you have my email address. You can email to me and I will respond.

  • I just discovered the Q2 Facebook page. I have an alert set for WQXR and an item came up. I would like to "friend", or whatever one calls it, the Q2 Facebook page so that items appear on my own page. I cannot find where or how to do this.

  • Brian, I don't know about the chanceswithwolves; but I looked at the NPR links. I use NPR/music a great dea. I recognize all of what is there. On all of those links, including all of the music links, that material is available for listening and/or download with the permission o0f the copyright owner. There is no getting around any legalities.
