Measuring Time: Music for 9/11/11

song="Overcome" artist=Live

:

For several days after 9/11/01, no NY radio stations played music. Instead, we were glued to accounts of the tragic events. Late one night on 9/14 or 9/15, I was driving home alone and whatever station I was listening said they were going to return to music. They opened with this song (Overcome, by Live), which I never heard before). My reaction was so strong that I had to pull over to the side of the road. Needless to say, I sought out this piece and have never listened to it without being moved again, back to those dark days.

Rise September 12, 2001

:

Words and lyrics are written by a Long Island native, now living in Manhattan, who personally experienced the tragedy and turmoil of being in New York on September 11. His music touches the heart.
Please include it in your play list.
thanks,
Brigid

"In Paradisum" from Durufle Requiem, Choir of Kings College Cambridge et al

:

the last movement of the Durufle Requiem is ethereal. But it's just one of my three choices I will request. The others are "Erbarme Dich" from Bach's St Matthew Passion and either "September" from R. Strauss "4 Last Songs" (sung by Gundula Janowitz, please!) or the last one, "Im Abendrot"... i weep when i hear the Bach and the Strauss... 9-11 is an appropriate day for weeping...

Reflections upon a September morn

:

This piece features some prescient poetry by Walt Whitman; everytime I hear the singer sing about the "fireman with breast-bone broken", I get chills.

Bach's Prelude & Fugue in E-flat minor, Bk. 1 of Well-Tempered Clavier, by Evelyne Crochet

:

Evelyne Crochet's interpretation has the quality of a prayer – at once deeply sorrowful and consoling. Since I found this treasured recording of the complete WTC in 2005, it has been my travel companion ever since; I listen to it constantly on my iPod. Incidentally, the identical acronym shared by Bach's collection and the World Trade Center has not escaped me; I am often reminded of the tragedy when I listen to my WTC. (Prelude & Fugue in B minor or B-flat minor would be me other suggestions.) A great recording.

Barber's Adagio for String and Mahler's 3rd and 5th Symphonies

:

The first immediately came to mind when I heard about this project, and I see it's already been suggested (was in the film Platoon). Both of the latter were in the 1971 film Death in Venice and were moving, I recall. I hope to tune in that day - great idea.

The music you played on 9/11/01

:

Dear lovely people--A week or so after 9/11, I sent you a note (to which you responded warmly) telling you that the music you played once there was room on the air for music did much to strengthen my spirit--for you reminded us all of what is grand & enduring in civilization. I can't remember what you played but, oh, I very clearly remember how right it was. Here's one time when repeating yourselves would be merely brilliant. Ever, Nancy

Victoria Williams "Can't Cry Hard Enough"

:

Whenever I even think of 9-11 I hear this song in my head. I remember it seemed to be everywhere during those days of mourning in NYC. It's a beautiful song and Angel sings it so poignantly. It just touches my heart in a way that no other song from that day and time does. I knew a lot of people who perished that day and this song is like a communal prayer for their loss, the suffering of their families and the deep sorrow we all felt and shared.

Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring and Sheep May Safely Graze

:

Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring signals a sacreness that reminds of me many of the elements of 9/11... the lives lost, the people who so willingly assisted others, the countries around the world who sent their condolences, the politicans- who for one moment forgot their partisan differences, and those of us who will never forget.

Sheep May Safely Graze reminds me of the people whose lives were direclty impacted by 9/11 with the hope that they has discovered some small element of peace and comfort.
