A "knee play" is supposed to be a connecting joint between scenes. Never heard of the term before Einstein on the Beach, but several years later Robert Wilson used the term again in his theater piece The CIVIL warS. The music for those knee plays was written by by David Byrne.
Re: The Bartok - The first time I heard the two early string quartets (1890's?) I thought I was listening to Elliot Carter, they were so astonishingly "modern".
