Tabula Rasa was my first Arvo Pärt CD. I wound up with about 25 of them, thanks to Stephen Hill at Hearts of Space (HOS). Stephen, now a good friend, is the most articulate person I know On Part. Here is his introduction to 1994 HOS PGM 0375 : "CONSTANT STILLNESS", the music of Arvo Part:

"As we reach the waning days of another year, we try to take the time to reflect on our increasingly complex lives. It's at these times the music of the contemporary Estonian composer ARVO P?RT takes on a special importance, due to its innocence, simplicity, and non-exclusive spirituality. P?rt writes music rich with silence against the general turmoil and hubbub of the world. His constant desire is to express the mysterious, the numinous, and the unknowable. "Time and timelessness are connected" he says. "This instant and eternity are struggling within us. And this is the cause of all our obstinacy, our narrow mindedness, our faith, and our grief." I'm STEPHEN HILL, and on this edition of Hearts of Space a program dedicated entirely to the music of ARVO P?RT, called "CONSTANT STILLNESS."

Elsewhere (not on this computer) I have Pärt describing his method of seeking to draw an infinity out of a moment of time, of working with the simplest of tools, one voice, two voices.

Thanks for including Arvo Pärt at Q2. Too bad that NYPR cannot see its way clear to bring back HOS to the New York City audience.

BTW, I sent the "Tabula Rasa" album to George Preston, when he was at WNYC, along with "Atlantic 1380" and Keith Jarrett's "Köln Concert"
