Met Patron Damages Picasso's "The Actor"

Monday, January 25, 2010

A notable painting by Pablo Picasso will undergo repairs, after a visitor to the Metropolitan Museum of Art accidentally lost her balance and struck the Picasso work.

Museum officials say that the accident caused an approximately 6-inch vertical tear in the lower right-hand corner of The Actor.  The nearly 6 x 4-foot canvas depicts an acrobat posed dramatically against an abstract backdrop.

The museum has about 250 works by Picasso in its collection.
