Laurent Gbagbo Arrested in Ivory Coast

Monday, April 11, 2011

Laurent Gbagbo, the former president of Ivory Coast, has been arrested, after authorities forced their way into the bunker where he's secluded himself for the past several days and apprehended him on Monday.

Gbago had refused to give up the presidency, even though Alassane Ouattara was declared the winner months ago. The ensuing chaos plunged the country into violence and confusion.

According to the Associated Press, there is no reliable estimate on how many people were killed, and more than one million people were forced to leave their homes over the past several months.
