Texas Democrat Charlie Wilson, 76, Dies

Thursday, February 11, 2010

Former Texas Democratic Representative Charlie Wilson died Wednesday at age 76 of cardiopulmonary arrest.

Wilson served 12 terms as Democratic U.S. Representative for Texas' 2nd Congressional District. National Public Radio reports that Wilson was something of a womanizer, opposed gun control and lifting the ban on gays in the military. His voting record was liberal on issues like abortion.

In addition to working on domestic issues, Wilson spent much of his career on getting aid to Afghan rebels fighting the Soviet occupation in the 1980s. Many got to know his name outside Texas when Tom Hanks played him in the 2007 movie Charlie Wilson's War.
