US Officials Killed in Ambush in Mexico

Monday, March 15, 2010

Officials say a suspected drug gang killed three people over the weekend in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico.

The Associated Press reports that an American couple and a Mexican man with ties to the U.S. consulate were killed when the gang ambushed their cars on Saturday. One of the Americans who was killed was a pregnant consulate worker, according to The New York Times. The Mexican citizen killed was the husband of another consular worker.

President Barack Obama said he was deeply saddened and outraged over the border city deaths. Officials are advising U.S. government employees to send family members out of the area, and American travellers are being advised to avoid the city.

Mexico's president, Felipe Calderón, said he would start an investigation into the case. Authorities suspect hit men allied with the Juarez drug cartel.

Nearly fifty people were killed in drug-related violence over the weekend in Mexico, according to The NYT.
