Tens of Thousands Still Without Power

Tuesday, March 16, 2010

Con Edison officials say the weekend storm was one of the worst they've ever seen, and it may take until Friday to restore electricity to all of the nearly 59,000 customers still without power.

Most of the outages are in Westchester County and on Staten Island, though more than half of customers who lost power have already had service restored.  Con Ed is distributing thousands of pounds of dry ice at four pickup locations for affected customers.

Meanwhile, New Jersey officials say it may be Thursday before power is restored to all its customers without power. As of 5 A.M. this morning, there were still 39,000 customers without power, mainly in Bergen County.

While crews have restored electricity to thousands of affected customers, Con Ed says the utility needed support from companies as far as Georgia, Ohio and Michigan.
