Thomas Hampson Thomas Hampson. (Margaret Kelley/WQXR)

For over 30 years, American baritone Thomas Hampson has been a steady presence across the world's opera stages, concert halls and intimate recital venues. And he shows absolutely no signs of slowing down.

This month, as he makes his company role debut as Verdi's Macbeth at the Metropolitan Opera, he will be honored by the Metropolitan Opera Guild in its “Met Mastersingers” series at the Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College.

He can also be heard in recital both live in Ridgewood, NJ (Sunday, March 18) and as host of Song of America airing Sunday nights at 9pm on WQXR.

Host Midge Woolsey sits down with Thomas Hampson to talk about his career, his inspirations and what's next.

THOMAS HAMPSON besides having a beautiful voice, good musicianship and good vocal technique is a remarkable advocate for music of many genres. Outside of his concert and opera rep , he is a masterful interpreter of Stephen Foster songs and song literature one does not readily envisage within the rep of almost all singers. Mr. Hampson is "unico" !

Thomas Hampson became the singer I always turn to when I want to hear great music superbly sung. I first heard him at the Met in 1990 as Valentin in Faust and have always watched his career thrive.
I had the opportunity to interview him the last time he performed at the Ravinia Festival in Illionois. He is as interesting and friendly sa you hear in this conversation. There is nothing 'fake' about him.

Thomas Hampson is the best vocalist in his field. His flexibility is unmatched. Please keep me up to date on his performances.
