Saturday Morning Cartoons: Ride of the Valkyries

Friday, May 10, 2013

For this Saturday’s cartoon, we spotlight the Ride of the Valkyries, from Richard Wagner’s Ring cycle opera, Die Walkure. This music is featured in “What’s Opera Doc,” a 1957 cartoon directed by Chuck Jones for Warner Brothers.

We play a recording conducted by James Levine, today’s guest on Operavore, coming up at 10:30am. And be sure to stay tuned for the Met Opera broadcast of Gotterdammerung, the final opera of the Ring Cycle, at 11 am following Operavore.

Jolanta from New York

My ten-year-old son, who is an aspiring pianist, heard a fragment of a piano sonata by Scarlatti on WQXR last Tuesday morning on our way to school. Would you be able to tell of which one of the sonatas it was? My son is very eager to learn it. Thank you for your help.
