On Saturday, Aug. 10 at 5 pm, WQXR broadcasts the fourth in a series of performances from the BBC Proms festival in London. Conductor Jac van Steen and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales launch the Proms cycle of Tchaikovsky symphonies with the baleful fanfare of the Fourth.

Celebrating his 60th birthday this year, cellist Raphael Wallfisch is the soloist in the BBC Proms premiere of Granville Bantock’s Sapphic Poem. It's framed by two very different portraits of Sir John Falstaff by Edward Elgar and William Walton.

Program details:

Elgar: Falstaff

Bantock: Sapphic Poem

Bantock: Hamabdil, Hebrew Melody (encore)

Walton: Henry V (Touch her soft lips; Death of Falstaff)

Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4 in F minor

Hosted by:

Clemency Burton-Hill
