Students, Parents Protest Arts School Closure

Friday, April 09, 2010

Students and parents rallied alongside staff at the Harlem School of the Arts, calling for a solution to keep the school open. They also bashed the schools' board of directors for keeping them in the dark about the severe financial straits facing the prominent school.

Nicole Hines, 14, has been taking dance classes at the school for 10 years. Her Facebook group, "Save the Harlem School of the Arts" has grown to more than 600 members within a week.

"This has been my home for me since forever," Hines said. "School is great but this is where I can be myself, feel confident. I love the teachers because each individual teacher knows you."

There were separate meetings for teachers and parents yesterday. The Harlem School for the Arts is a community institution that has offered music and art classes for 46 years. Board members say they need five hundred thousand dollars to keep the school open through June.
