Wednesday, April 28, 2010

The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has selected a new artistic director.

36-year old choreographer Robert Battle will succeed Judith Jamison in 2011. Battle has been working with Ailey since 1999.

The New York Times reports that the dance troupe, one of the most successful and popular dance companies in the country, has an overall budget of $26 million dollars.

They add that the company's 30 dancers spend weeks on end on tour. The troupe's school, housed at its Midtown headquaters, holds 300 classes a week, teaching 13,000 people each year
