A Jasper Johns painting of the American flag in the collection of the late best-selling writer Michael Crichton sold for $28.6 million last night at a Christie's auction. The New York Times reports that's a record price for a Johns work.

Last night was the first time the Johns painting, "Flag," was auctioned in public. Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania dealer Richard Rossello bought it. Before the auction, "Flag" had an estimated price of $15 million, at most. The previous auction record for a Johns work was $18 million for "Figure 4," in 2007.

UPDATE SINCE THIS STORY FIRST WAS POSTED: This article was updated to reflect the price tag for "Flag."
