"Shrek" Will Close January 3

Thursday, October 22, 2009

Shrek the Musical will have its 441st and last Broadway performance January 3, just 13 months after opening night.

The DreamWorks theater production of its Oscar-winning film will wrap it up due to waning ticket sales, The New York Times reported. The play's sales last week were around $583,000--just 40 percent of what a sold-out show at the Broadway Theatre might have brought in. Tickets to the show start at $35.

Shrek the Musical is not the only Broadway show having economic woes. Disney's The Little Mermaid musical closed on Broadway in August, The Times reported. Both musicals will tour outside New York City in 2010.
