Jose Carreras to Perform at La Scala

Wednesday, July 21, 2010

Jose Carreras, who was one of the Three Tenors with Placido Domingo and the late Luciano Pavarotti, will perform at Milan's La Scala opera house this fall.

According to the Associated Press, it will be Carrera's first performance at La Scala since 1996. The October 10 show will be a benefit concert for the European Society for Medical Oncology.

In a statement posted on ESMO's website, Carreras, a leukemia survivor, urged others with the disease to keep their hope alive. "You can return to live as you did before. Before the tumor, before the illness," he said. "With the same determination and the same energy."

Carreras created his own foundation, the Jose Carreras Leukemia Foundation, following his own struggle with the disease in 1988, according to the AP.
