Saturday Morning Cartoons: Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair

Saturday, June 04, 2011

Stephen Foster wrote Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair for his wife, but the song has taken on a life of its own. The first line "I Dream of Jeanie" inspired the popular 1960's television series and several cartoons have parodied the song.

About a minute into this Looney Tunes clip, Bugs Bunny makes a pun when he sings of Jeannie, "she's a light brown hare."

Alvin and the Chipmunks mock Jeanie by singing of her "with the green-purple hair." As punishment for angering her, they have to learn the correct words.

The song also inspired a Japanese anime cartoon by the same name. Watch the closing credits for the series below.
