Proms: BBC Philharmonic Plays Sibelius, Hindemith, Davies and Bridge

Email a Friend

Finnish Conductor John Storgårds leads the BBC Philharmonic in pairing two of Sibelius's most popular pieces, Finlandia and the Second Symphony, with two lesser-known British works (Peter Maxwell Davies's Fifth Symphony, Frank Bridge's Oration).

The program highlights two themes of this year's Proms. The centenary of the outbreak of World War I is commemorated with Oration, a haunting one-movement cello concerto composed in 1930 (with the young soloist Leonard Elschenbroich). Composer Peter Maxwell Davies’s 80th birthday is another major thread this year, acknowledged with his Fifth Symphony.

Program:

Jean Sibelius: Finlandia
Sir Peter Maxwell Davies: Symphony No. 5
Frank Bridge: Oration
Paul Hindemith: Cello Sonata, Op.25 No.3; 5th movement (Mäßig schnell)

Intermission

Jean Sibelius: Symphony No. 2 in D major
